Three years ago, we set out to bridge the information gap for marginalised audiences in Nigeria and across Africa, equipping them with greater awareness of community-driven innovations tackling health and development challenges.
With over 30% of the global population actively avoiding the news, we also sought to rebalance the narrative. As News Literacy Labs aptly puts it, we believe that solutions journalism “has the potential to make [people] more hopeful about society and the world, while also enabling them to take a more balanced approach in terms of their exposure to news.”
As an innovative newsroom, experimentation has been at the heart of our approach to reporting. Acknowledging the dominance of English in Nigeria’s mainstream media, we ventured into reporting in local Nigerian languages and Pidgin English. This led to the launch of the Localising Solutions Journalism Project, supported by the Solutions Journalism Network. Through this initiative, we trained over 50 journalists in Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, and Pidgin English, enabling them to deliver crucial coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This project is just one of many initiatives we have championed. To date, we have nurtured a network of more than 100 freelance journalists who have collectively published over 80 reports on our platform and, many of which have been featured on the Solutions Journalism Network Story Tracker.
Our efforts have garnered both local and international recognition. Most recently, we were honoured with the Best Solutions Journalism Award in West Africa at the inaugural Excellence in Journalism Awards, organised by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID).
However, these achievements have not come without challenges. The tough market landscape in the media sector continues to affect our efforts to advance reporting and innovation.
Last year, we focused on structuring our workforce and establishing an advisory board to guide our efforts in delivering journalism that is not only impactful but also sustainable.
For the first time, we have taken a step back to reflect on our journey.
